Vienna is one of our favorite places to visit in all of Europe. Elegant opera houses and old-world cafes mix with cutting-edge galleries and cool new bars. And if you’re a Cheapo that loves culture, there’s always something going in the city — including a large number of free performances!

Maybe it’s time to make this classic European metropolis a stop on your next trip? If you need a little more convincing, here are 5 reasons to make your way to Vienna in 2018.

1. Browse the famous Easter markets

Spring kicks off every year in Vienna with a number of Easter markets around the city. With more than 60 vendors, the market at Schönbrunn Palace (March 17 to April 2) is a fun place to find souvenirs or enjoy a bite to eat. If hand-painted eggs are your passion, head to the Old Viennese Easter market at Freyung (March 16 to April 2) where you’ll find thousands of gorgeous eggs on display.

2. Visit a new museum dedicated to Beethoven

Opened in November of 2017, the brand new Beethoven Museum focuses on the life of this cherished composer who called Vienna home for more than three decades. Walk through an apartment where he once lived and learn about his cultural impact on Vienna and the world. There’s even a garden to enjoy a moment of quiet solitude.

3. Explore art and culture … in the evening!

Want to wander through a gallery after the sun goes down? Make sure to visit Vienna on a Thursday night when several museums stay open until 9 pm. Stroll around the Leopold Museum or the Austrian National Library for an unforgettable evening. At the Kunsthistorisches Museum, you can even combine your love of art with a gourmet dinner in one of the beautiful domed halls.

4. Discover Viennese Modernism in 2018

What do Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Wagner, and Koloman Moser have in common? They all had a huge impact on Vienna with their influence on modern art and design. 2018 also marks the 100th anniversary of their deaths, so the city is highlighting works by these modern icons. 5. See a world-famous opera for less than €5
